The Andrew Jackson Volunteers split a pair of road games with rival North Central High on Tuesday evening. The Lady Vols pervailed in their match with the Lady Knights 52 to 46. The Vols lost to the North Central boys 56 to 39.
The Lady Vols started strong and was able to get the ball easily. The Lady Vols oversaw the floor in the first two quarters of play. The dynamic changed after halftime and the game became a seesaw of leads. A last quarter surge by the Lady Vols led to the victory.
Osha Black led with 12 points on 5 goals and 2 of 4 free throws. Caroline Wrenn scored 11 with 4 goals, and 3 of 5 free throws. Mackenzie Marshall added 10 points, Ieasha Williams scored 8 points. Annsley Vick had 6 points and Oksana Lathan added 5 points
For North Central Peyton Holley was top scorer with 17 points on 5 goals and 7of 9 free throws. Kali Tomlin was second highest scorer with 16 points on 5 goals and 5 of 5 free throws. Ciaira Black scored 6 points. Madison Dixon added 5 points. Makaila Grant had 2 points
The Lady Vols took the first quarter by a score of 13 to 7. North Central gained the lead by 2 points at the half. The third quarter went to North Central by 7 points 35 to 28. The Lady Vols had the lead at the end of the game for the win 52 to 46.
Lady Vols head coach Olivia Gaines commented on the game. “We started off the game with energy and then we relaxed once we were up and that cant happen, if so then we give the team a chance to stay in the game with us and it becomes a dog fight like the other night. My team as been taught late game situations so they are prepared for adversity, I am proud of how we finished the game but we cant relax on offense nor defense but it also showed me and my coaching staff how well my team is growing tremendously.”
The Volunteer boys had difficulty completing their shots. The team missed shots that they typically made. Rebounds were made, and the potential points failed to materialize as shot after shot was attempted. Defensively the Vols allowed 17 unanswered points.
For the Andrew Jackson boys, Joey Walters was lead scorer with 16 points on 2 goals and 4 treys. Jamie Hinson scored 7 points. Josh Adams scored 6 points. OJ White added 5 points. Tyrone Gilford and Jalen Robinson added 2 points each. Jawquinn Black had 1 point.
Tyrek Jenkins was top Knights scorer with 19 points on 6 goals and 7 of 9 free throws. Tyler Faulkenberry scored 12 points. Avante Reynolds had 8 points. Zy Dunham scored 6 points. Markell Portee had 5 points. Estaban Rodriquez, Jamel Jones, and Matthew Clem each had 2 points.
Andrew Jackson took the first quarter with a score of 10 to 6. North Central was in the lead at the half with a 20-17 score. The Knights held the lead through three quarters 43-31 and finished the game with a win by a score of 56-39.
Vols Head Coach Danny Wright said. “We had to many turnovers and didn’t execute on defense and offense. We just did not play with that fire and energy like we did in the first three games.” He added. “We must fine that fire and play with more energy and discipline on Friday.”
The Lady Vols are now 4-1, 1-0 in the region. The Lady Knights drop to 1-5 , 02 in the region. The Vols pick up their first loss of the season and stand at 3-1, 0-1 in the region. The Knights are 4-2 ,2-0 in the region.
Andrew Jackson will host rival Buford Yellow Jackets on Friday the 14th, North Central faces off against McBee on the 14th.
