Senior Night in Kershaw SC was especially exciting as the The Andrew Jackson Volunteers wrapped up their last 2018 home game with a victory over the Lewisville Lions 41-6. The Lions came into the game at 0-7 for the season. The Vols stepped onto the field with the goal to stop a three game losing streak. Gavin Phillips the quarterback who was injured in the AJ vs Buford game returned to the field during this game. Chas DeBruhl is still out for the season, but was on the sideline offering support. Both teams eager to win was the feeling as the Lions kicked off to AJ at the start of the game
The Volunteers brought a strong rushing game to the match AJ outran Lewisville by over 300 yards. The Lions were slightly better than the Vols on passing. Overall the Vols had 483 yards of offense to the Lions’ 214.
The Vols struck early with a pass from Gavin Phillips to Oj White that resulted in a 46 yard touchdown. Avery Funderburk added an extra point at 9:45 in the first.
At 8:45 in the second half, the Lions found the end zone on an 8 yard run by Ja’Shawn Jason for the Lions only scoring drive. They attempted a two point conversion, but were stopped short.
The Vols’ Jamie Hinson answered back about a minute and a half later with 7:12 left in the second he ran in a 46 yard touchdown. With the extra point the Vols lead 14 to 6 through to the half.
Most of the third quarter was scoreless until there was just 10 seconds left on the clock. Phillips completed a pass to Samaad Rushing for an 18 yard touchdown. Funderburk missed the extra point. Funderburk has been strong all season, and it was a rare miss for him.
Vols led 20-6 going into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter saw three touchdowns for Andrew Jackson. At 6:45 left in the last quarter, Hinson ran the ball 11 yards into the end zone, and Funderburk added another point to advance the score 27-6.
With a minute and 24 seconds left in the game, Hinson passed to OJ white who ran it in for a touchdown bringing the final offensive scoring drive to a close with the score of 34-6.
The Lions quarterback attempted a pass with 37 seconds left in the game and Jamie Hinson intercepted it at the 42 for a defensive Pick 6. The extra point brought the Vols a victory with a final score of 41-6
Coach Todd Shigley said. “Good win, I am proud of the guys. We came out hot, and we lagged a bit in the middle and came back strong at the end. They just kept grinding away.”
Three turnovers and 3 interceptions for the Lewisville Lions made it difficult for them to make headway during the game. Both teams had multiple rotations into the quarterback positions. The Volunteers showed a balanced offensive and defensive front. The offense drew on the rushing shills of the team, and strong defensive tackling by AJ stopped the Lewisville advances. There were a high number of penalties during the game. Between both teams, 26 penalties were called. The referees were watching extra closely during the game and make calls that set off the sidelines several times.
