Shooting Death on Maplewood Ave

At 1:20 a. m. today, Monday, September 24, 2018, deputies of the Lancaster
County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence on Maplewood Avenue in
Lancaster concerning a shooting. At the scene deputies discovered a white male who was
apparently shot one time in the upper torso. Lancaster County Emergency Medical
Services personnel transported the man to Springs Memorial Hospital and then to
Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He died on the way to Charlotte. Lancaster
County Coroner Karla Deese identified the man as Jamey Randal McCants, age 44, of
929 Confederate Avenue, Lancaster. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
Other deputies, investigators, and crime scene investigators responded to the
scene. The person who fired the weapon remained at the scene, as did all others who
were present when the shooting occurred. Those present were known to each other. All
were interviewed by law enforcement personnel. The handgun believed to have been
used in the shooting was recovered. Investigators are not searching for a suspect or
suspects.
“Based upon the information we developed from our interviews with the
witnesses concerning how and why this incident occurred, we did not take the person
who fired the handgun into custody,” said Sheriff Barry Faile. “We are continuing to
investigate this matter. There are other people we need to talk with, and we have
possession of evidentiary items that will be processed and examined. When we complete our investigation we will present our findings to the solicitor, and a decision about
whether charges should be made will occur at that time.”
