Andrew Jackson Volunteers lost to rival North Central on Wednesday night at North Central. The game was initially scheduled for Friday, but was moved to Wednesday due to Hurricane Florence.
The game became very emotional after several helmet to helmet tackles by North Central players. Two of these tackles resulted in Volunteers’ Jamie Hinson and backup quarterback Gavin Phillips losing their helmets. Andrew Jackson’s starting Quarterback was tackled and thrown to the ground early in the first quarter which resulted in a fractured collarbone. His return this season is undetermined. Coaches, players, and fans fer very vocal over the way play was occurring and officiating.
With the injury loss of Chas DeBruhl, the Volunteers drew on the talents of Jamie Hinson, OJ White and Gavin Phillips to fill the quarterback spot. For the remainder of the first half, it appeared that AJ was trying to find a rhythm without their starting quarterback.
Andrew Jackson scored first at 5:27 in the first quarter when Ty Elder blocked North Central’s punt and recovered it in the end zone. Avery Funderburk made the extra point. North Central tied the game up at 2:37 in the first quarter when #14 ran in a 12-yard touchdown. The North Central kicker made the extra point making the score 7-7. North Central found the end zone again with 7:01 in the second quarter with a 1-yard run by number 6. The extra point was not good, bringing score to 13-7. With 1:54 left in the first half, North Central’s #15 ran in a one-yard run and then #13 ran in a two point conversion. Score at half was 21-7
Andrew Jackson rallied at the beginning of the third quarter. At 9:18 in the third, Luke Faulkenberry ran in a 3 yard TD, and Funderburks’ extra point was good. The Volunteers seemed to have regained some direction with the half time discussions. Late in the fourth quarter, AJ kicked a field gal and advanced the score to 21-17. The final touchdown was made by North Central when #8 ran in a 28 yard run and with the extra point, the final score was 28-17 in favor of North Central.
Head Coach Todd Shigley was notably upset at the end of the game. He commented “We did not execute when we should have, and there was a lull in the game.”
The Loss brings the Vols to 4-1,0-1 for the season.
The mood at the end of the game was tense and officers of the Kershaw Sheriff’s Department positioned themselves between shouting coached form both teams. Many AJ fans and parents voiced anger on Social Media on Thursday, and North Central fans and parents made counter claims against Andrew Jackson.
