The Andrew Jackson Volunteers defeated the Great Falls Red Devils 47-2 to remain undefeated in the 2018 season. Last week Chas DeBruhl showed the strength of their passing game, this week he brought the Vols running game with 4 of 8 rushing scoring drives.
The game was begun with the students of Kershaw Elementry singing the National Anthem
The Vols found 16 points with just over 2 minutes expired in the first quarter. The AJ defense blocked a Great Fall punt and recovered it in the end zone for a safety. AJ takes the lead at 9:39 in the first 2-0. Immediately after, OJ White took the kickoff at the 50 and ran the ball for AJ’s first touchdown of the game. Avery Funderburk made the extra point, AJ led 9-0 at 9:27.
The Vols recovered a Great Falls fumble and DeBruhl handed to the Samaad Rushing who took it 20 yards for the touchdown at 9:13 in the first. Funderburk added the extra point. The first quarter ended with AJ leading 16-0. Five seconds into the second quarter, Avery Funderburk added three points with a 35-yard field goal to make the score 19-0.
At 9:10 left in the second quarter, a bizarre looking play occurred. Great Falls had the ball on the 9-yard and had thrown 3 incomplete passes, with 4th and goal, Great Falls threw the ball, and Ty Elder intercepted the ball in the end zone. He ran the ball out of the end zone. The ball ended up back in the end zone and recovered by AJ. The Great Falls team was credited two points for a safety. These would be the only points Great Falls would receive during the game. AJ leading 19-2
At 5:32 in the third Galvin Philipps intercepted a Great Falls pass. This set up two running plays by Jamie Hinson. The second run from the 2-yard line resulted in an AJ touchdown. Funderburk added the extra point to bring the score to 26-2. Hinson again scored with 1:42 left in the second with a 10-yard touchdown, Funderburk brought the score to 33-2 at the half.
The second half would be under a running clock. At 4:47 in the third, AJ’s DeBruhl passed to Dalton Starnes for a 6-yard touchdown. With the extra point, AJ led 40-2. The Volunteers final touchdown was a 40-yard running score by OJ White with 8:55 left in the game. Final score 47-2
The Vols made 13 first downs to Great Falls’ 10. Total offense for Andrew Jackson was 210 yards in 31 plays of which 178 were rushing yards. Great Falls had 48 plays for a total offense of 107 yards, 72 of which were rushing yards. Great Falls completed 4 of 17 passes for 35 yards with 3 interceptions. Andrew Jackson completed 7 of 9 passes for 32 yards and no interceptions. The Vols sacked the Great Falls quarterback once. The Volunteers had 6 penalties for 40 yards to Great Falls single penalty that was declined.
AJ head coach Todd Shigley was pleased with the win. He notes that there are still things to work on. Of specific concern was the penalties during the game. “We did a good job, and the guys did well coping with the running clock. Now we have to prepare for regional play against North Central next week.”
Andrew Jackson currently is in the lead in the Class AA regional standings and 6th in overall Class AA standings. Andrew Jackson 4-0, 0-0 travels to North Central 2-2, 0-0 on Friday at 7:30 pm for the regional matchup. North Central is coming off a loss 33-7 against Lamar.
