Chas DeBruhl led the Vols to a 37-8 away win with an overwhelming passing game against Trayshon Peeler and the Wildcats running game. The Vols defensive line shut down the Wildcat rushing game and allowing only one score.
Andrew Jackson took charge with their first possession. DeBruhl threw a pass to Samaad Rushing for a 57-yard touchdown. Gavin Blackmon ran in the two-point conversion at 10:22 in the first quarter to set the score 8-0 for AJ. With 5:54 in the second quarter, the Wildcats responded with a 1-yard run by the quarterback Peeler and a 2-point conversion to tie up the game.
The score at the half was made 16-8 at 3:18 left in the half when Vols Quarterback DeBruhl connected with OJ White for a 56-yard pass play. That set up a 3 run by OJ White for a touchdown and two-point conversion.
The teams battled with many four and outs in the third quarter. The Volunteers scored with a 4-yard quarterback keeper by DeBruhl and an Avery Funderburk extra point with 27 seconds left in the third. Vols 23 Wildcats 8. The final quarter saw the Vols find the end zone two more times. After the prior touchdown, the Wildcats fumbled the ball and Ben Hinson recovered. The Vols had one play before the end of the third quarter. Just a minute into the fourth quarter, Luke Faukenberry ran ten yards for AJ 4th touchdown. Funderburk added the extra point, bringing the score to 30-8.
AJ fifth and final scoring drive was a 40-yard run by OJ White right through the center of the field. The extra point by Funderburk brought the score to the game final of 37-8.
The passing game was a strength for the Vols in this game. They out-passed the Wildcats 219 yards to 71. The Vols rushing game was also strong besting the Wildcats 108 yards to 83. Because the Wildcats were a primarily running team they took the lead with 38 runs to AJ’s 28. The Wildcats made twice as many first downs with 12 to AJ’s 6. Each team fumbled the ball once and had an interception. The Vols had 9 penalties for 50 yards and Blacksburg had 3 penalties for 25 yards. AJ missed 2 field goal attempts. The Vols quarterback completed 12 of 27 pass attempts, and the Wildcats completed 7 of 21 pass attempts.
