The Andrew Jackson Volunteers dominated their Friday night season opener against the McBee Panthers. An impressive series of 7 touchdowns lifted the Vols to a final score of 45 to 3. The win fits right into the efforts of Coach Todd Shigley to have the team expect to win.
The Panthers took the lead early with a field goal at 8:25 in the first quarter. Less than two minutes later, AJ responded with a 3-yard run by Jamie Hinson at 6:45 in the first quarter to bring the score to 6-3. Aj took the score to 13-3 with a 4-yard run by Luke Faulkenberry and extra point with 2:22 left in the first quarter. Jamie Hinson ran a punt return 70 yards for the third AJ score of the game at 10:55 in the second quarter. The Extra point attempt was unsuccessful in bringing the score to 19-3. With 5:17 left in the half, AJ scored again when OJ White ran the ball had towards the goal and lost the ball on the one-yard line. Caleb Myers picked it up and ran it in for a touchdown. With the successful extra point, the score at the half was AJ 26 and McBee 3.
The Vols scored again at 2:13 in the third quarter with a pass reception by Samaad Rushing for a 47-yard play. The extra point attempt failed, AJ 32-3. AJ returned to the end zone at 10:40 with a 10-yard run by OJ White. The extra point missed bringing the score to 38-3. The final score was a 75-yard run by OJ White at 2:57 left in the game. The successful extra point brought the score to a final of 45-3
Andrew Jackson ran the ball 30 times for 320 yards and completed 10 passes for 169 for a total offense of 489 yards. The Vols got 6 first downs. AJ completed 10 of 13 passes with one fumble and no interceptions. AJ had 5 penalties for a loss of 40 yards. Ben Hinson lead the Vols with 7 tackles, Ty Elder had 6 tackles. AJ head coach Todd Shigley was pleased with the win. “It is a great first win. We still have some things to work on.”
The McBee Panthers ran the ball 35 times for 8 yards and completed 9 passes for 65 yards for total offense of 73 yards. The Panthers got 6 first downs. The Panthers completed 9 of 13 passes with one interception and two fumbles. Panthers had 9 penalties for a loss of 45 yards. Panthers head coach Charlie Poole summed up the game, “They are a physical team and we did not execute.”
The Volunteers play away next Friday to take on St. Johns Islanders. McBee has their home opener against Chesterfield next Friday.
