At the Colonel Springs House in Lancaster, gubernatorial candidate James Smith announced that he had chosen local attorney and SC Representative Mandy Powers Norrell as his running mate. This is the first year where the SC gubernatorial race will have the Lt. Governor on the same ticket as Governor.
The location has special significance to Norrell. Her parents were Springs Industries employees for their whole working careers. She spoke of how her parents would have reacted seeing her standing on the porch of Colonel Springs home accepting the honor of helping James Smith become Governor. Smith was impressed with her ability to work across the aisle in Columbia. “She is ready to be governor,” he said as he discussed her qualifications.
Smith is the Govenor’scanidate to name his running mate. Jame Clyburn and several dignitaries were present to lend their support.
