The 2017-18 basketball season ended for the Andrew Jackson Lady Volunteers when they lost in the second round of the Class AA playoffs to the Blacksburg Lady Wildcats at home 53-52. The Lady Vols finish with a record of 17-4, 11-1.
The Lady Wildcat had a fast paced game that brought many turnovers for the Lady Vols. The Lady Vols trailed the Lady Wildcats for most of the game, struggling to close the points gap. The Wildcats took off with a 9 point lead in the first quarter 14-5. At the break, the points gap had grown to 10, with a score of 25-15. After halftime the Lady Vols started to gain some traction, inching closer to the lead, 24-26. The Lady Vols battled back to take the lead 51-50 with 28 seconds left in the game on a rebounded score by Makaylen Crosby. Caroline Wrenn added the final point for the Lady Vols from the free throw line. The Lady Wildcats’ Jada Ferguson landed 2 free throws that pushed the Wildcats to victory with a final score of 53-52.
Danielle Ussery finished her high school basketball career with a 25 point game, hitting 5 field goals, 2 treys, and 9 for nine free throws. Iesha Williams dropped in 9 points. Caroline Wrenn added 7. Osha Black added 6 points. Raegan Brewer had 3 points, and Makaylen Crosby had 2 points.
“They fought all the way to the end. We got into a fast-paced game too early and that is not our typical game. They still fought hard and battled back” said Lady Vols coach ShaRon Robertson.
AJ had 21 team fouls and one technical foul. They turned the ball over 41 times. Blacksburg had 32 team fouls and 24 turnovers. Jada Ferguson paced the Lady Wildcat win with 17 points
