Columbia, SC- Taylor Wade from Andrew Jackson High School and Alexia Story of Buford High School and 4 other regional Poetry Outloud winners are headed to the SC state finals to be held March 10th, 2018 in Columbia at the Richland Library Main Branch.
The SC Arts Commission coordinates the state and regional competitions. Over the past 12 years, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, SCAC has brought the poetry recitation competition to the schools of SC. In 2017, 7500 SC students from 35 schools from 14 counties participated.
The students will compete for the opportunity to be the State representative in the national finals on April 23-25 2018 in Washington, DC. State winners receive $200 and an all-expense paid trip to the national finals. State runner-ups receive a cash prize. The prize for winning the national contest is $20,000
Poetry Outloud helps students master public speaking, build self-esteem, and learn about literature. It has grown to nearly 3.5 million students and teachers from 10,000 schools across the nation.
