The Andrew Jackson secured the regional champions title with their defeat of rival Buford Lady Yellow Jackets. The Lady Vols took the 7 point victory on Friday night at their final regular season game. The win was the 10th in a streak for the Lady Vols. They now advance to the playoffs starting on Tuesday at home. They end the regular season with a record of 16-3 and 11-1 in the region.
Lady Vols’ Danielle Ussery led the charge with 3 field goals, 6 treys, and 2 for 2 free throws for a total of 26 points. Raegan Brewer dropped in 9 points. Caroline Wrenn added 6 points. Makaylen Crosby and Iesha Williams each had 3 points each.
The Lady Vols took the lead early in the first quarter with a one-point advantage 12-11. The second quarter saw the Lady Vols continue to outscore the Lady Jackets to bring the score to 25-23 at the break. The third quarter saw the Lady Vols continue to rack up points to end the quarter 33-29. The Lady Vols surged during the last quarter to finish 47-40.
The teams were tied with just 7 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. The Lady Jackets broke the tie with a free throw. A field goal by Ussery at 5:20 advanced the Lady Vols to 34-35. Caroline Wrenn dropped in a field goal at just under 5 minutes to make it 34-37. Ussery landed a trey at 4:34 to make it 34-40. Ussery hit another trey from the top of the key at 3:34 to advance the score to 34-42. Raegan Brewer sank a pair of free throws to add the final points to get the win.
“Great consistency, good offense and good defense. They knew this was a must win to get the region.” Said ShaRon Robertson coach of the Lady Vols.
Buford’s Paige Davis had 5 field goals and 3 of 8 free throws to lead the Lady Jackets with 13 points. Hunter Allen had 11 points. Sophie Ribelin added 6 points. Payton Howell added 5 points, Isabella Jones had 3 points. Sidney Rabon added 2 points
T.J. Armbrust coach of the Lady Jackets said “I thought my girls battled to the end. Both teams played hard and AJ made the key plays at the end. I thought it was the most complete game we have played this year. Our effort was outstanding. We did not shoot the ball well, but our determination kept us in it.”
Lady Vols had 20 team fouls and 15 turnovers. The Lady Jackets had 20 team fouls and 15 turnovers.
In the boys game, the Jackets found their playoff berth with a 61 to 58 overtime win over the Volunteers during the Friday night must win the game at Andrew Jackson. Both teams enter the game with a chance to advance to the playoffs with a win. The score was 53-53 at the end of regulation.
The boys traded the lead for the first minute of overtime. Tanner Wallace hit two free throws with 2:30 minutes left to advance the Jackets to a score of 59-55. Shylyn Wright’s two free throws at a minute left in the game sealed the win for the Jackets. A three-point shot by Jamie Hinson brought the score to 61-58 at the end of overtime.
Tanner Wallace, Shylyn Wright and Justin Hyde each had 14 point each to lead the Jackets to victory. Joseph Barrino added 11 points. William Ingram had 6 points. Andrew Allen added 2 points.
“We played hard and never gave up. We hit a couple of big shots at the end, and came out on top.” Said Steve Sellers coach of the Jackets.
Andrew Jackson junior Shieme Ricks hit 7 treys and 5 of 7 free throws for 26 points. Jamie Hinson added 12points. Morgan Truesdale dropped in 10points. Joey Walters had 5 points. Darrion Wright added 4. Josh Adams added 1 point.
“This is a young team and they played hard and did not hang their head down. I am proud of them” said Danny Wright AJ coach.
The Volunteers had 28 team fouls and 3 turnovers. Buford had 18 team fouls and 14 turnovers.
The loss ends the Volunteers season with a record of 4-13, 3-9. Buford enters the playoffs with a record of 6-13, 3-9.
