The Andrew Jackson Volunteers faced off against the Cheraw Braves on a Tuesday night away conference game. The Braves scored a 70-55 win against the Vols, and the Lady Vols fought to a hard finish and loss by 2 to the Cheraw girls 44-42.
The Volunteers took the lead at the end of the first quarter 11-6, and carried the lead almost to the half, when the Braves found a surge and took the lead 22-21. The third quarter seemed to be the Vols downfall, when they were outscored by a margin of 14 points, which brought the score to 43-28 Braves. The AJ Boys tried to close that gap in the final quarter, but at the end of the game, the gap remained. Final score was 70-55 in favor of the Braves.
Shieme Ricks lead AJ scoring with 13 points and 3 Treys. Jamie Hinson added 12 Points with 1 Trey. Josh Adams shots 5 inside shots for 10 points. OJ White scored 8. Morgan Truesdale had 4 points, Jalen Patterson and Joey Walters each had 3 points. Cam Vincent added 2 points.
AJ Coach Danny Wright said. “We are still trying to gel together. We still have to get better with our defense, and switches. We have to get a little more hustle out of the guys. The first year Varsity players have to get used to the speed.” Wright went on to say that the third quarter slump was what knocked them back.
Jalen Coit was high scorer for Cheraw with 25 points.
The conference battle between the Andrew Jackson Lady Vols and the Cheraw Braves Girls, was much tighter with several tie scores late in the game. The Lady Vols took an early lead by 2 in the first quarter with a score of 10-8. The Braves took the lead in the second quarter and at the half, the score was 19-15 in favor of Cheraw. The Braves maintain the lead into the third quarter advancing to a 9 point lead, 29-20. The Lady Vols caught some fire and began to battle back to a tie games with just over 2 minutes left in the match. A series of fouls and free throws marked the closing minutes of the game, and Cheraw prevailed 44-42.
Danielle Ussery scored 18 points with 3 Treys, Caroline Wrenn added 9 points, MaKaylen Crosby added 6 points. Raegan Brewer had 4 points. Osha Black had 3 points, and Iesha Williams had 2 points.
“Great effort, we just came up on the short side of the stick. We played a lot better than we did in the tournament. All we can do is build off it.” Said AJ Coach ShaRon Robertson.
Callie Bryant was high scorer for Braves with 15.
The Volunteers will take on Chesterfield in a home conference game on January 9th starting at 6pm. Cheraw will travel to North Central on Friday Night January 5th for a game against the Knights.
