The North Central Knights stuck to basketball fundamentals to secure a 65 to 58 victory over Andrew Jackson on Tuesday night at Andrew Jackson High School. The Volunteer boys tried to find the basket through long shots, the Knights got in their face, worked the ball to the inside and made more of their shots
The Vols got an early lead with Jamie Hinson dropping in a 3-point shot, and for the most of the first quarter, Vols kept the lead. A last second score by North Central, made the score 11 to 10 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was a closely matched eight minutes. The Vols outscored the Knights 20 to 17. Strong defenses kept scoring down. By the end of the 2nd quarter, the Vols were in the lead 30 to 28.
The third quarter saw nine unanswered points earned by the Knights to bring the score to 45-38 in favor of the Knights. The Vols had trouble getting the ball into the basket. One series saw the Vols make more than five attempts under the net to get the ball to drop in, which it did not.
The fourth quarter found both teams scoring 20 points each. The final score was 65-58.
Markell Porter lead Knight’s scoring with 21 points, and Tyrek Jenkins followed with 16. Cameron Holley added 11 points which included 3 treys, and Jamel Jones scored 9 points. Tyler Faulkenberry added 6 points and Dimitri Robinson 2. The Knights had 15 turnovers and a total of 16 team fouls.
Jamie Hinson lead the Volunteer scoring with 20 points including 2 treys. Joey Walters added 14 points including 2 treys. Josh Adams had 8 points and Shieme Ricks added 7 points. OJ White had 4, Darrien Wright 3 and Daymond Cunningham 2. The Vols turned over the ball 11 times, and had 10 team fouls.
North Central head coach Cary Hayes said. “We focused on fundamental basketball, like getting back to the passes, taking great shot selection, and playing hard defense. The effort and hustle was there tonight. Andrew Jackson has two or three good three point shooters and we knew we had to get a hand in their face and we did that more than not tonight.”
The Lady Vols took the 68-44 win over North Central in the Tuesday night game. They established a ten-point lead in the first quarter and kept adding points throughout the game. The Lady Vols lead 18 to 8 at the end of the first quarter. At the half, the Lady Vols lead by 20 with a score of 33 to 13. The Lady Vols outscored the Lady Knights by 7 in the third quarter to advance the score to 54 to 27. The final quarter saw the Lady Knights outscore the Lady Vols by three points. The final score was 68-44 in favor of the Lady Vols.
Iesha Williams took top Lady Vols scoring honors with 21 points, and Danielle Ussery was second with 12 points. Caroline Wren and Raegan Brewer added 11 and 10 respectively. Makaylen Crosby had 6 points, and Mackenzie Marshall had 4. Osha Black and Anna Hinson each had 2 points. The Lady Vols had 22 turnovers and 16 team fouls. Danielle Ussery was top three-point shooter with 4.
Peyton Holley scored 25 points for the Lady Knights, with Andrea Green adding 8. Amarhi Boykin had 6 and Kali Tomlin had 5 points. The Lady Knights had 29 turnovers and 11 team fouls.
“Our defense created our offense for us. Some of our seniors stepped up and knocked down big shots for us, so we had a great team effort.” Said Sha’Ron Robertson head coach for the Volunteers.
The Volunteers will travel to Pageland to play Central High School on Friday. North Central will host Lugoff Elgin at home on Friday.
