AJ Lady Volunteers VS Buford
High winds and cold temperatures greeted the AJ Lady Vols as they opened play in the first game of the SCHSL Class AA Upstate Championship Playoffs. The Vols lost the Friday night match to rival Buford 3-2. The temperature dropped to about 52 degrees after the sun set. The wind kept the flag outstretched through out the game.

The Volunteers are one of 4 teams competing for the Upstate title. The playoffs are double eliminations, so a team is only eliminated after two losses.
Kaitlyn Holden earned the first run for the Lady Vols after being walked to first, she advanced on a sacrifice bunt. An error on the Jackets first baseman, allowed Holden steal home for a run in the third inning. Kinley Killough then blasted the ball over the fence for a solo homerun. The LadyVols were unable to score again in the game. AJ pitcher Morgan Hendrix struck out three of the Jackets, walked one, and allowed 7 hits.
The mood among the LadyVols stayed strong throughout the game. Hope was kept alive with loud and spirited cheering for team mates.
Buford took the lead in the second inning off a single by Deese, and a double from Boone. The double earned Boone the RBI. In the third inning, Allen singled, and Wemes handed a double. Sullivan brought both runners home for runs, earning 2 RBIs. Allen and Paterson hit singles in the 4th inning, but were unable to score. The Buford pitcher struck out six of the Vols, allowed 2 hits and walked 3.
Andrew Jackson beat Cheraw on Monday May 8th at home and advance to Play Landrum in an away game on May 10th. If they win against Landrum, they will face off against Buford again in the Upstate Championship.
